
Lydia Roberts
Flutist. Educator. Music Teacher.
Dr. Lydia Roberts enjoys helping students of all ages to enjoy the gift of music. An experienced educator, she has served on the music faculties at Eastern Mennonite University, Bridgewater College, Southern Virginia University, and James Madison University, where she taught courses in applied flute, woodwinds, and music appreciation. Previously, she has taught private music lessons at Shenandoah Valley Academy, the Shenandoah Valley Preparatory Music program, and the Columbus School of Music and Dance (GA). In addition to running a vibrant private music studio, Dr. Roberts currently teaches flute and music theory at the Csehy Summer School of Music. She holds degrees in flute performance from Bob Jones University (Bachelor of Music), Columbus State University (Master of Music and Artist Diploma), and James Madison University (Doctor of Musical Arts).

As an adjudicator, Dr. Roberts has judged for the Columbus Music Teacher's Association Festival, the Georgia Federation of Music Clubs Griffin Piano Festival, the Georgia Association of Christian Schools' Fine Arts Competition, the Virginia District 5 Band Flute auditions, and the Flute Society of Washington's Collegiate Soloist Competition.

An avid performer and collaborator, Dr. Roberts performs with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival Orchestra. She has toured with ensembles at Carnegie Hall as well as Barcelona, Spain, where she was a flute concerto soloist at the Costa Brava International Music Festival. She has also performed with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (GA) and served as principal flutist of the Columbus Ballet Orchestra (GA). Solo performance highlights include the 2019 National Flute Association Convention in Salt Lake City and the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention in Reston, VA. As a pianist, Dr. Roberts has accompanied choirs, vocalists, and instrumentalists, and often accompanies congregational singing at her church. She is forever grateful to her flute and piano teachers: Beth Chandler, Andrée Martin, Amanda Barrett, Lynn Borton, Faye Lopez, and Catherine Bull.
